Reconfiguring Spaces In Impactful Ways
A childhood interest in sketching, designing and engineering drawing became the building block for Raman Sikka to reconfigure spaces in impactful ways. Honing his boyhood passions helped Sikka make Sikka Associates Architects (SAA)—an architectural design consultancy firm established by his father SR Sikka in 1981—one of the leading firms in the world.
The New Delhi-based firm comprises a multi-talented team—planners, architects, designers and engineers—working on a range of projects in all sectors, from architectural design to master planning across the country, including Jodhpur, Shillong and Leh, as well as overseas in China, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Oman.
The firm has won many accolades for its innovative designs and it is now working on a landmark project, the NSCBI Airport in Kolkata, that stands out in its impressive portfolio. “It is a unique statement of seamless landscape, architecture and structure,” says Sikka. Other ongoing projects include the World Trade Center—one of the world’s largest single office buildings—in New Delhi and the museum on Indian prime ministers in the capital.
‘Live by Design’ is the firm’s mission and philosophy that has helped it achieve great heights. “Working with leading international architects and firms has kept us abreast of global standards and trends,” says Sikka. Apart from making efficient and cost-effective buildings, SAA is big on using green technologies to create spaces that are enjoyable and environmentally friendly. “Our own head office in New Delhi—LEED Platinum rated—is a live example to our staff and clients of our commitment to sustainability,” says Sikka. He believes “holistic sustainability and unique experiences” are the key elements designers and architects should keep in mind when creating structures for the future.
